MHT-CET December Attempt and JEE Main 2027: One 10-Week Plan for Both
MHT-CET's first attempt now comes before JEE Main. Here is how to prepare for both, and keep boards on track, over the next 10 weeks.

For years, Maharashtra PCM students wrote JEE Main in January and then turned to MHT-CET in April or May. That order is changing. The CET Cell plans to hold the first attempt of MHT-CET 2027 between December 15, 2026 and January 15, 2027, which puts it before JEE Main Session 1.
So your first serious exam this year may be CET, not JEE. You have about 10 weeks until the CET window opens. If you plan well, preparing for MHT-CET and JEE Main together is mostly one job: the core syllabus is shared. What changes is how you practise in the final weeks before each paper.
This guide covers the dates, how the two exams differ, where the syllabi overlap, and a week-by-week plan that keeps boards on track too.
The dates: confirmed vs tentative
Last updated: October 6, 2026
| Exam | Date | Status |
|---|---|---|
| JEE Main 2027 Session 1 | January 22, 23, 24, 28, 29, 30, 2027 | Announced by NTA |
| JEE Main 2027 registration | Not announced yet | Last cycle it opened on October 31, 2025 |
| JEE Main 2027 Session 2 | April 2027 | Dates not announced |
| MHT-CET 2027 first attempt | December 15, 2026 to January 15, 2027 | Planned, as stated by the CET Commissioner; no official notice yet |
| MHT-CET 2027 registration | Expected around October 2026 | Not open yet |
| MHT-CET 2027 second attempt | April 2027 | Reported; not officially notified |
The MHT-CET 2027 first attempt date is not yet backed by an official notice. Reports say the better of your two CET scores will count, but confirm that in the 2027 information brochure when it comes out. Check cetcell.mahacet.org and jeemain.nta.nic.in directly rather than relying on forwarded messages.
One more thing to watch: the Maharashtra government has set up a committee to consider giving Class 12 marks weightage in the engineering and pharmacy merit list. Nothing has been decided yet. Until it is, treat boards as something that may matter more than before, not less.
JEE vs MHT-CET: how the two exams differ
The pattern details below come from the MHT-CET 2026 brochure and syllabus document, and the JEE Main 2026 information bulletin. The 2027 documents may change them, so check again when they are released.
| MHT-CET (PCM) | JEE Main (Paper 1) | |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 150 MCQs: 50 Physics, 50 Chemistry, 50 Maths | 75: 25 per subject (20 MCQs + 5 numerical) |
| Marks | Physics and Chemistry 1 mark each, Maths 2 marks each (200 total) | +4 correct, -1 wrong, in both sections (300 total) |
| Negative marking | None | Yes |
| Time | 180 min: 90 min for Physics + Chemistry, then 90 min for Maths | 180 min for all three, in any order |
| Average time per question | About 54 sec (P+C), about 1 min 48 sec (Maths) | About 2 min 24 sec |
| Syllabus base | Maharashtra State Board (SCERT): Class 12 fully, selected Class 11 chapters | NTA's JEE Main syllabus (NCERT-aligned) |
| Class 11 vs 12 | About 20% Class 11, 80% Class 12 | Both classes, no fixed split |
What this means in practice:
- Speed vs depth. The official CET syllabus says the difficulty level is at par with JEE Main, and the questions are mainly application based. But you get far less time per question, especially in Physics and Chemistry. CET rewards fast, accurate recall and short calculations. JEE gives you more time per question and asks for multi-step reasoning, including numerical answers with no options.
- Guessing. With no negative marking in CET, you should never leave a question blank. In JEE, a blind guess costs you.
- Section lock. In CET, the Physics + Chemistry block auto-submits after 90 minutes. You cannot carry spare time into Maths, so practise with that split.
- Weightage. For MHT-CET PCM weightage in 2027, expect the same split unless the brochure says otherwise: Maths is worth half your total, and 80% of questions come from Class 12.
MHT-CET and JEE syllabus difference: what's shared, what's not
Most of the Class 12 syllabus is common ground. The differences sit at the edges, and those edges are where students lose easy marks.
For Class 11, MHT-CET tests only these chapters (as listed in the 2026 CET syllabus document):
- Physics: Vectors, Error Analysis, Motion in a Plane, Laws of Motion, Gravitation, Thermal Properties of Matter, Sound, Optics, Electrostatics, Semiconductors
- Chemistry: Some Basic Concepts, Structure of Atom, Chemical Bonding, Redox Reactions, Elements of Groups 1 and 2, States of Matter (Gases and Liquids), Adsorption and Colloids, Hydrocarbons, Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry, Chemistry in Everyday Life
- Maths: Trigonometry II, Straight Line, Circle, Probability, Complex Numbers, Permutations and Combinations, Functions, Limits, Continuity, Conic Sections
| Area | Where it appears | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Most Class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Maths (electrostatics, current electricity, EMI, optics, modern physics, kinetics, electrochemistry, coordination compounds, organic chemistry, calculus, vectors, 3D geometry, probability) | Both | Core work. Study it once, at JEE depth. |
| Mathematical Logic, Pair of Straight Lines, Linear Programming, Binomial Distribution | CET (State Board Class 12); not in the JEE Main 2026 syllabus | CET-only. Usually quick to learn. Do them from State Board textbooks and CET PYQs. |
| Solid State, Polymers, Green Chemistry and Nanochemistry | CET (State Board Class 12); not in the JEE Main 2026 syllabus | CET-only. Mostly direct, fact-based questions. |
| Groups 1 and 2, States of Matter, Adsorption and Colloids, Chemistry in Everyday Life | CET Class 11 list; removed from JEE Main | CET-only. Short revision is enough. |
| Sequences and Series, Binomial Theorem, Sets and Relations, Statistics, Equilibrium, Mechanical Properties of Solids | JEE Main syllabus; not on CET's Class 11 list | JEE-only. Keep these in your JEE practice. |
For CET, use the State Board textbook language and diagrams, since questions follow that syllabus. For JEE, go beyond it with harder problem sets.
Which exam to lead with
You are preparing for both, but for each week you need to decide which exam gets priority. Use a simple rule based on your recent full mocks (at least two of each):
- Lead with JEE until about three weeks before your CET slot if your JEE Main mock scores are already close to what your target colleges need, or if you are aiming for NITs and IIITs. Shared topics at JEE depth will carry into CET.
- Lead with CET if your JEE mocks are far from your target and a good Maharashtra state college is the realistic goal. Shift to CET-style speed practice earlier, around week 5.
- If you can't tell, take one CET mock and one JEE mock this week. The exam where you are further from your goal, but which still decides your admission, gets more hours.
Whichever you lead with, do not drop the other completely.
The 10-week plan (October 6 to December 14)
This assumes your CET slot falls in the second half of December. If your slot turns out to be in January, stretch weeks 4 to 7 and keep the final three weeks the same, just shifted.
Boards minimum, every week: about 4 to 5 hours of State Board textbook reading and written answers, plus any school prelims or practicals on your calendar. Because CET follows the State Board syllabus, much of this time also helps CET.
| Week | Dates | Main focus | Mocks and practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Oct 6 to 12 | List every chapter for both syllabi. Mark each one strong, shaky, or not started. Register for both exams once forms open. | 1 JEE mock, 1 CET mock as a baseline |
| 2 | Oct 13 to 19 | Shared Class 12 topics at JEE depth: start with your weakest high-weight chapters | Chapter tests, JEE PYQs by topic |
| 3 | Oct 20 to 26 | Shared topics continued; Class 11 chapters that appear in both exams | 1 JEE mock |
| 4 | Oct 27 to Nov 2 | Shared topics; start JEE-only chapters | Chapter tests, mistake log review |
| 5 | Nov 3 to 9 | Finish shared syllabus coverage. Start CET-only chapters: Maths first, since each question is worth 2 marks | 1 JEE mock, 1 CET sectional (Maths) |
| 6 | Nov 10 to 16 | CET-only chemistry and Class 11 CET list. Revise weak shared topics | 1 JEE mock, CET PYQs by chapter |
| 7 | Nov 17 to 23 | Shift to CET: State Board textbook revision, CET PYQs, speed drills | 1 CET full mock, 1 JEE mock |
| 8 | Nov 24 to 30 | CET full mocks with the 90 + 90 split. Fix the chapters that cost you marks | 2 CET full mocks |
| 9 | Dec 1 to 7 | CET mocks, revision of formulas and textbook facts, short JEE practice to stay sharp | 2 to 3 CET full mocks, 1 JEE sectional |
| 10 | Dec 8 to 14 | Light revision, error log, sleep schedule matched to your exam shift | 2 CET mocks, then taper |
After every mock, spend at least as long reviewing it as you spent taking it. Sort each wrong or skipped question into one of three buckets: concept gap, silly mistake, or ran out of time. Each needs a different fix.
After CET attempt 1: planning the run to JEE and April
Depending on your slot, you may have anywhere from one to five weeks between your CET paper and JEE Main Session 1. Use them like this:
- Switch back to JEE mode the next day. CET habits like answering every question and racing through Physics will cost you in JEE. Do one JEE mock within the first few days and review it closely.
- Use your CET performance as data. Note which chapters felt slow or unfamiliar while they are fresh. Shared chapters that hurt you in CET are your priority for JEE.
- Keep boards moving. Board exams and practicals follow soon after JEE. Do not let them slide to zero in January.
- Plan for April. If your CET result is below your target, the April attempt is a second chance. Reports say the better score counts, so a weak first attempt is fixable. Confirm this in the brochure. Between JEE and April, your State Board revision for boards doubles as CET revision.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Studying CET-only chapters in October. They are short and score well, but they belong in weeks 5 to 7. Shared topics come first.
- Using only JEE material for CET. CET follows the State Board syllabus and wording. Read the textbook, not just coaching modules.
- Taking CET mocks without the time split. If you practise with 180 open minutes, the auto-submit at 90 minutes will catch you out.
- Leaving CET questions blank. There is no negative marking, so answer every question.
- Carrying the CET guessing habit into JEE. In JEE, guess only when you can eliminate options.
- Taking mocks without reviewing them. A mock you do not analyse tells you your score and nothing else.
- Ignoring boards. Class 12 marks may count for more in the future, and board study also covers the CET syllabus.
Where Aspiraa fits
The hardest part of this plan is not the hours. It is deciding each day what to do next when you are preparing for two exams with different syllabi, weightage and dates, plus boards. That is what Aspiraa's Next Action Engine does. It looks at your syllabus, mock results, mistakes, weak topics, how recently you revised each chapter and how much time is left, then tells you what to study next.
PYQ intelligence shows which CET-only topics actually come up again and again, so you know where to spend your limited CET-only hours. Mock diagnosis separates time errors from concept gaps and silly mistakes, and the analytics view sorts topics into Fix now, Fix this week and Maintain. Aria, your AI mentor, handles doubts as they come up.
